One horizon, or it is a collage

A vision board is a page of images that point at a future you are willing to schedule. The Spanish search visión board, and the unaccented vision board, name this object. The board fails when it mixes a vacation, a new job, a fitness plan, and a redesigned kitchen with no shared date. Pick one horizon: this semester, or this year.

Every image needs a caption in words, written as a behavior. A photo of a quiet library is vague. The caption 'Tuesday and Thursday, 4 to 5 pm, third-floor desks' can go on a weekly planner. The picture is the cue. The caption is the plan. Goal language in full sentences lives on the goal-setting page.

Four zones that stay readable

Divide the board into skill, place, people, and proof. Skill: what you will be able to do. Place: where the work happens. People: who is involved, by role, not by a fantasy cast. Proof: the artifact that will exist at the horizon, such as a finished portfolio piece or a race time you have trained for.

Cut images that do not fit a zone. A board with 30 pictures and no captions is a mood. Moods do not tell you what to do on Thursday.

Steps

  1. Write the horizon on the board. A month and a year. Undated boards drift.
  2. Choose four images, one per zone. Add more only after each of the four has a caption.
  3. Caption the behavior. A day, a duration, or a countable output. Avoid a slogan.
  4. Move one caption onto this week's plan. If nothing transfers, the board is decorative.

Questions

What is a vision board for?
Keeping one future visible, with images as cues and captions as behaviors. It is a planning page, not a wish list of unrelated purchases.
How many goals should a vision board hold?
One horizon. Several images can support that horizon. Several unrelated ambitions on one sheet compete for attention and none of them get a week.
Do the pictures have to be photographs?
No. A sketch, a ticket stub, or a single printed word works if the caption says what you will do.
